BHA Launches its Manifesto for the 2010 General Election

The British Hospitality Association which represents the nation’s hotels, restaurants and catering businesses has launched its manifesto for this month’s election.
The hospitality industry is mainly a small business sector, with over 80 per cent of firms employing fewer than 50 people. The average establishment has just six employees.

Conservatives Attack Labour Over Decline and Closure of Community Pubs

The Tories have launched a stinging attack Labour for failing to support community pubs.
The party claims that Treasury figures reveal that 3,500 pubs closed between 1997 and 2009, the period over which Labour has been in power, after being confronted with a "perfect storm" with the beer duty escalator increasing tax on alcohol by 2% above inflation every year.

Payments by Cash on the Way Out in Pubs

Only 25% of payments in pubs will be made with cash by 2018, according to a new report.
The Way We Pay report from the Payments Council revealed that cash transactions in pubs dropped from 90 per cent in 1999 to 40 per cent in 2009, as more consumers chose payment by debit cards and characteristically ordered food as well.

Trading will remain tough for the dining out market during the next 18 months with only moderate growth anticipated, according to industry analysts Horizons.
Horizons predicts the sector will grow by around £850m during the period to a new value of £42.8bn, which is likely to keep competition for custom severe.

Campaign to Save Three Cups Hotel in Lyme Regis

A campaign is under way to secure a future for a famous Dorset hotel. The Three Cups famed for where J.R.R. Tolkien stayed and sketched out much of his mythology, as did Jane Austen, G.K. Chesterton, Tennyson and H.W. Longfellow who were also guests.
The hotel also featured in the film, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”, starring Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep.
Pub Sector Hits Out at Another 'Miserable' Budget

The pub trade was dealt what has been described as another devastating blow as Chancellor Alistair Darling announced across the board above inflation duty rises on alcohol in last month’s Budget.
During his first Budget speech, Darling announced a 2p a pint rise in duty.
