The hospitality industry is losing too many highly trained, talented young people before they are able to make a serious long-term contribution to the industry, Bob Cotton, chief executive of the British Hospitality Association and chairman of the National Skills Academy, told hospitality students in a lecture at the University of Surrey.
He said the industry was wasting the talent that it had recruited.

Call to Reverse Tourism Funding Cuts

The Government is being pressed to reverse its decision to cut VisitBritain funding and devote more resources in promoting tourism after official figures revealed a 4% fall in the number of tourists visiting the UK between May and July.


The inflation linked increase in the minimum wage was well received by employers’ groups when it was announced earlier this year. Previous increases which were above inflation had threatened to put a strain on sectors, such as hotel and catering, they warned.

More Brits dream of opening a pub than becoming an astronaut; more than 90% of which said the catering industry has become more appealing due to a couple of Hairy Bikers, a foul mouthed chef and a school dinner’s campaign.
In a survey of over 2,860 Brits, almost 1 in 4 respondents said they dreamt of opening their own pub or restaurant. Only 19% of us dream of becoming a Fire Fighter, 11% admit to dreaming of becoming a Doctor and 8% dream of becoming an Astronaut.
National Minimum Wage Increases to £5.73

The national minimum (NMW) wage rises from £5.52 to £5.73 an hour for employees over the age of 21 from October 1st. There is also an increase from £4.60 to £4.77 an hour for 18 to 21-year-olds, and from £3.40 to £3.53 for 16 and 17-year-olds.

Young Chef Young Waiter 2008 Winners Announced!

The results are in! The Restaurant Association has selected the overall winners of the 2008 Young Chef Young Waiter Competition following the national final held at Westminster Kingsway College in London.
In total eight chefs and eight waiters, all under 25yrs, took part in the final at Westminster Kingsway on 30th September. The 2008 winner of the prestigious title for the chefs was Alejandro Jose Cancino from Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons. Chief Judge for the Chefs, Bruce Poole of Chez Bruce commented:

Q Hotels received nationwide recognition last month when it was named Hotel Group of the Year at the AA Centenary Awards 2008. AA Hotel Services, celebrating one hundred years of quality and service in the hospitality industry, held the glamorous black-tie ceremony, hosted by celebrity chef James Martin, at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.
