During April purchasing consortium Beacon asked its customers logging on to the beacon purchasing website what the local in 'local produce' means to them.
A significant number of consumers are now focussing on local produce, with over 50% of customers now requesting it when eating out.
UK Hotel Industry Continues to Suffer Through First Quarter of 2009

Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has confirmed that the hotel industry continued to suffer during the first quarter of 2009 with a sharp decline in leisure and corporate travel. UK cities overall experienced a decline in revenue per available room (revPAR) by an average of £5 (9%).

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has spoken out at its distaste for further beer tax increases in this year’s Budget as its board of Directors converged upon one of Britain’s most historic breweries.
At their annual Conference over one thousand CAMRA members overwhelmingly endorsed a call to freeze excise duties and scrap the beer tax escalator as new research shows the heightening effect taxation is having on beer prices at the bar.
Fun in Fundraising

Hospitality Action (HA) is calling for all hospitality workers to put ‘fun’ into fundraising this month and become ‘action heroes’ for a week.
Participants are invited to wear pants over their trousers to raise money. Once people have registered, HA will send them action hero stickers for their pants. Then it's down to the individual to get going with colours, glitter, tinsel and pens to make the pants the talk of the town.
Worst Recession Since Second World War Hoteliers Told

A top economist told hoteliers gathered at the International Hotel Investment Forum in Berlin (IHIF) that the present recession is the “worst since World War II”.
Roger Bootle, managing director of Capital Economics and advisor to Deloitte, admitted that his gloomy forecast at 2008’s IHIF, which was criticised as too pessimistic at the time, was in fact “not pessimistic enough”.
Liberal Democrats Take Tourism Campaign to Number 10

The Liberal Democrats took their campaign calling on the British government to take tourism seriously to 10 Downing Street last month, tying in with British Tourism Week.
The Liberal Democrats called on the Government to overturn the funding cuts to tourist body VisitBritain, which has seen its marketing budget reduced by almost £15m between 2003 and 2010.
1,000’s of Jobs at Risk if Tips Top Up for Wages Banned

The British Hospitality Association (BHA) has warned that up to 45,000 hospitality sector jobs could be at risk if the Government makes it unlawful for operators to top-up minimum wage with non-cash tips.
The BHA has urged the Department for Business to delay the implementation of the law, cautioning that under the existing harsh economic climate the legislation would add millions of pounds of extra cost to a beleaguered industy..
Sun Ad Launches National ‘TEXT the Chancellor’ Campaign

‘Axe the Beer Tax Save the Pub’ has launched a national campaign in The Sun to ‘TEXT the Chancellor’ urging him not to raise Beer Tax in next month’s Budget. To take part, simply TEXT the word ‘LOBBY’ to 81025, and a message will be sent directly to Alistair Darling.
The Chancellor increased Beer Tax by 18 per cent in last year’s Budget, and plans to raise it again next month. However, there are clear signs that his new proposals to put up Beer Tax are increasingly unpopular:

Top Chef Dinner Raises £100,000 For Children’s Charity

Chefs James Martin, Henry Brosi, John Campbell, Chris Galvin and Paul Gayler helped raise £100,000 for Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF) the UK’s leading organisation dedicated to fighting all liver diseases of childhood, by cooking at a fundraising dinner at The Dorchester, Park Lane last month.
Roux Scholarship 2009 Final Six Chosen

The six national finalists for this year’s Roux Scholarship have now been selected, following simultaneous regional finals last Thursday in Birmingham and London.
The regional finals took place at University College Birmingham and Thames Valley University. The finalists prepared their recipes for best end of lamb, which had been their original entry requirement. They were also asked to produce a dessert from a surprise box of ingredients given to them on the day itself these ingredients were eggs, milk, double cream, sugar, gelatine, and vanilla.
