British Hospitality Association Endorses Service Charge Code of Practice

The British Hospitality Association is urging all restaurants to adopt a new Code of Service Charge Practice, which is being developed in conjunction with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
At a meeting of major restaurant groups at the accountancy firm BDO Stoy Hayward in London today, BHA’s chief executive, Bob Cotton, said that the current controversy over the service charge had damaged the industry’s reputation.

Industry Bodies Call for Beer Tie to Go

Pub owners may be able to break the tie with the pub companies (pubcos) that own them, thanks to lobbying by business and industry bodies.
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has welcomed the Business and Enterprise Committee's findings on pubcos, which highlights the unfair relationship between pubcos and pubs. The FSB has been campaigning for the tie to be lifted since 2004. Pub owners currently struggle with high rents and prices of alcohol forced on them by the pubcos that manage them, leaving up to 40 pubs closing each week.
Restaurant Charity StreetSmart Launches Its 2009 Campaign

Restaurant charity StreetSmart has launched its 2009 campaign and is calling on for restaurants to get involved.
The campaign, which will run in 18 cities and regions throughout the UK in November and December, raises money for the homeless by asking diners to add £1 to their bill.
Sponsored by Deutsche Bank, which covers all of the charity’s administration costs, all proceeds are used for projects supporting people back to employment and sustainable independent living.
A Great British Night with Hospitality Action

Hospitality Action was thrilled with the success of its latest fundraising event, which raised £35,000 to help the organisation’s beneficiaries.  The event, which saw the seven chefs from the 2008 BBC 2 series of the Great British Menu, was held on Monday 18th May at the Marriott Grosvenor Square and was hailed a resounding success by all who took part and attended.
Hotel Occupancy Stays High During Easter But Rates Fall

As Britain prepares itself for a heat-wave, the courageous lads of the Best of British BBQ team are flying the flag across the pond at three key contests this year.
First is the I Love Barbecue Festival in July held at Lake Placid, NY. Mark Grimmette twice Olympic Luge medalist heard the team were competing and has kindly loaned a Char-Griller Smoker BBQ to the team for the contest. Then the lads drive up to Canada for the Annual Canadian BBQ Championships in Barrie.
Drinkers Must Get in Line

Plans drawn up by council in the North of England would see drinkers limited to ordering two drinks at a time, after queuing in line behind a rope barrier. The council has proposed the plan to curb binge drinking in the city.

The Changing Face Of British Menus: Has Sirloin Steak Lost Its Appeal For Good?

Chicken breast has overtaken sirloin steak as the most frequently listed main course item on pub, restaurant and hotel menus, according to new research from Horizons. Their biannual Menurama research looks at the dishes listed on Britain’s restaurant, hotel and pub menus. The latest results clearly reveal the impact of higher costs and price-conscious consumers with last year’s most frequently listed main course menu items of sirloin steak, veggie burger, sausage and mash, fish and chips and rump steak being replaced by chicken breast, fish & chips, Sunday lunch and risotto (excluding pizza and burgers).
