Complaint to EU Threatens EnglandNet Booking System
08 Sep 2009
The future of VisitEngland's accommodation bookings system, EnglandNet, is under threat after a complaint to the European Commission claiming that it is in breach of EU competition laws and wastes taxpayers' money. The complaint, made by a Devon based holiday letting agency Helpful Holidays alleges that, as the EnglandNet directory is a Government subsidised system, this allows it to undercut competitors in the its private sector. Furthermore, since it is obligatory for properties to hold an AA or VisitBritain Quality in Tourism rating for inclusion in the directory, thus preventing non subscribers from promoting their accommodation in any Tourist Information Centres, the system is allegedly in breach of competition laws.
Hotels, Restaurants & Pubs are Britain’s Top Recyclers
08 Sep 2009
Small hotels, restaurants and pubs are boosting Britain’s green business credentials, with more recycling their waste than in any other sector. An impressive 87% are now doing this, up from 80% in just two years and well ahead of the UK average. The biennial SME-nvironment survey by environmental guidance website NetRegs.gov.uk also reveals an impressive doubling in the number of small and medium-sized hotels, restaurants and licensed premises (SMEs) improving their energy and water efficiencies (32%, up from 14% in 2007). Across the sector, 58% have introduced practical measures aimed at reducing environmental harm – again putting the sector ahead of the UK average of 55% and proving that hotels and restaurants are really making strides in reducing their impact.
