Invest In Staff Training To Beat The Recession, Say Restaurant Experts

A panel of restaurant experts has revealed the only way to survive the recession is by training staff, concentrating on loyal customers, and closing at quiet times. In a panel debate at The Restaurant Show 2009, held at earls Court last month Bob Cotton, chairman of the British Hospitality Association, said the recession was far from over for restaurateurs, and if they wanted to survive they needed to focus on the basic business principal of reducing overheads.
Tips Legislation Takes Effect as Row Over Costs Rumbles On

The controversial new law banning restaurant operators from using tips to top up minimum wage comes into effect this month (October 1). The new law closes the loophole that has allowed restaurants to use service charges to subsidise national minimum wage and will guarantee that staff are paid salaries in full, meaning they will now pay national insurance contributions on the whole amount.
